Although it was my intention to remain at the water’s edge, as dawn broke the next morning, I began my search for the missing soldiers while keeping a keen watch on the sound. Upon entering the marsh’s northwestern border, I found that the climate was altered from its usual and it now bordered on being tropical. Although, I could not see it with my own eyes, the increase in humidity made one feel as if I was walking through a wall of water with each step. It was not my intention to remain amongst the poison of the marsh for long, but with evidence of Prince Berenger’s men still being found here, I needed to search further. With numerous tracks going in all directions, I could tell there had been some attempting to make it out alive, but I was not able to find any traces beyond the marsh. With her death and the death of the bairn I placed within her, I vowed to see the demise of man through the end.

With each step towards Losgadh I felt the anguish of losing them all over again and was grateful for the solace the marsh provided. No blade, poison or magic could have wounded me as deeply as watching King Itheal slay his Queen because she loved another. Loss such as that, changes you. It was man’s cruelty that destroyed me and the man I once was. Most view me as callous and vindictive, and although they would be correct, I was not always as such. It is what I wanted to tell Eira as we stood in the darkness of the passageway that day. Persisting would change her in ways she could not begin to understand and what I felt for her…what I still feel for her is not real. It is the binding these markings hold over me and will continue to hold over me. I will never feel the warmth of
